I think it's worth a try. I'd normally say, "Drive over it with a crawler, THEN put sand in the oil", but, given the description of his 'dad', I'd say the opportunity does present itself here to TRY to turn a wayward kid around. Anything confrontational that will involve 'dad' will almost for sure lead to WORSE problems for you, and not better. Leave a detailed note on the ATV, stating that you are in a justified position to bring in the law, but you want to cut the kid a break, and come to a 'deal', so you want him to come and see you. If he does, then you know you're on the right track, and you've got something to work with. Chores are the best character builder a kid can ever have... and an understanding male role model. I KNOW you don't owe him anything, but his 'dad' obviously never gave him anything morally to go on, and that's where you can make the difference. The law is always there, but the chance to turn that kid around may be fleeting. The issue of whether the ATV is hot or not is a dicey problem; he sure isn't going to admit it, so you'll have to take the VIN off of the ATV and report it to the law before you do anything else with the kid. If it doesn't turn out to be stolen, you can go from there with the kid on it, but, if it does, some kid somewhere misses it a lot more than this one enjoys it, and he should have it back. Don't cut any deal with this kid on that; non-negotiable. You can keep him from having a nasty brush with the law by just letting the law know about the ATV, and have them pick it up if it's hot, without saying who stole it. THEN tell the kid that you could have turned him in, but you didn't, but you still CAN, and, if he wants to avoid that, he's is now YOUR probate; you've taken an interest in him, and, if he makes a real effort for a year to smarten up and clean up his act, then you'll re-consider or 're-evaluate' whether to turn his case over to the law or not. Another year of keeping his nose clean, and you'll wipe the slate clean, and that young lad just might have a firmer grasp on a decent future. Don't jump all over me, guys; this is highly un-like me, but, given the description of the 'dad' in this picture, I pulled the shut-off knob on the crawler, and sat and ruminated for a while...

12-Volt Conversions for 4-Cylinder Ford 2000 & 4000 Tractors - by Tommy Duvall. After two summers of having to park my old 1964 model 4000 gas 4 cyl. on a hill just in case the 6 volt system, for whatever reason, would not crank her, I decided to try the 12 volt conversion. After some research of convert or not, I decided to go ahead, the main reason being that this tractor was a working tractor, not a show tractor (yet). I did keep everything I replaced for the day I do want to restore her to showroom condition.
