I have been in many tractor and automobile shows around the country over the years. I personally like not having to pay anything to show a tractor, but I also understand it costs money to put on these kind of shows.

At any automobile show I have ever been to, cars were always expected to pay an entry fee if there was any type of voting or trophies awarded for anything. If it was a cruise in and nothing given out, then we never expected to pay anything. Many national meets we attended could cost upwards of $75 to $100 for a three day event. You usually got yourself in and one other person. Families had to pay for the kids to then get in too.

At tractor shows I have been to, I have never HAD to give any money to get in. And it always seemed that the exhibitor gate was fairly low security about family getting in too. This is a huge change from the car show days. Guys can say what they want to about the cost and price of tractor restorations, but I have never seen an $80,000 show tractor. Most range in the $2000-$8000 category. But I have been to street rod nationals where the average car was in the $25,000 range and there were over 10,000 cars.

I have also participated in local shows and known people that put it on. These guys operate on a shoestring budget to make the show happen. A ton of money is laid out in advance and if there is a rain out, all that money is lost. So they too have a lot of risk riding on mother nature. Most of the time the promoters have to pay to get in the big ticket items too like the big dog tractor pullers, pulling horses, and other such attractions. These guys are not cheap. They are also expected to turn over a portion of the gate receipts to the show ground people.

So I can see why these shows might want or need to charge a little to show, if you are that cheap, leave your equipment at home and work in the field with it. I don’t think putting on a show is a get rich scheme for these guys, they are just trying to keep their heads above the water. Help them out. I don’t think it would bee to much to ask. After all, you are having fun right. That should be worth something to you.
