In the early 1950's my dad had a cedar swamp cleared to make a pasture. It needed tillage, and he tried to do it with a John Deere B and a 4' wide disk tiller. That's a single axle disk, heavily weighted, with 5 blades, about 18' in diameter. Somewhat akin to a disk plow, but not quite as agressive. Well, he got into trouble right away. Finally borrowed a set of tires off another B, and slid them on the outside of the axles along with the regular tires. So, he had duals on his tractor. Worked wonderfully for that muck land. All the neighbors were rolling in the aisles with laughter. Now their sons (and grandsons) are running duals and triples, and FWD and track type machines, and no one's laughing. Wish my dad could be here to see them, and have the last laugh!
