It's a whole lot more complicated than you think guys. Do a Google search for "mineral spirits", "naphtha", "white spirits" and "Stoddard solvent" and in 15 minutes you'll be so confused you won't know which end is up. Both names may mean the same thing, or they may be slightly different depending on manufacturer. Mineral spirits, white spirits, Stoddard solvent, naphtha, petroleum naphtha are very similar, but they will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Only way you can tell the difference is get the MSDS and start getting some numbers to go by. When the MSDS business first started we were told we could no longer buy mineral spirits from our old bulk supplier, we had to start using petroleum naphtha that came in sealed drums with a label. Only difference is petroleum naphtha cost a LOT more, and the naphtha is generally de-odorized. Here are just 3 of the many, many links I found.
