I'd guess a worn distributor bushing, causing the point gap to wabder all over the place. You've done about everything else. It's pretty easy to check, just pop off the distributor, take it too a bench, and check the play. It should be almost non-existant.

You also might want to post this on the N board...lot's of experts there.
