Paul, You should not have that much play in the rotor. On some of the Fords there is a clip that goes between the rotor shaft and the rotor. It has been a while since I had mine apart so I don't remember if the 8n had one. I think it does. I do know that they seem to vanish when removing the rotor (i.e. they slide off with the rotor and fall out when you are not looking). Tractor will run terribly without it, as the timing will constantly be changing. You can check on the N board. They will be able to tell you if the N should have the clip. Hope this helps, CR
