IH M with 8 volt battery

I have just installed an 8 volt battery in my IH "M" to give it a little more starting ump! Well, it has, it starts twice as good as the 6 volt used to turn it over. I believe the 6 volt had a problem because it wouldn't stay charged good. I have noticed the amp meter is not showing a charge as good as it did with the 6 volt, is that because of the higher voltage battery no showing as much charge from the 6 volt generator?
Do you charge an 8 volt battery with a 6 volt charger? Anything else I need to know after putting that 8 volt battery in that ole "M"? you guy's input always appreciated......
