The mass of a tank requires several hundred horsepower to get moving, so most of the industrial and farm equipment engines of the day were not anywhere near powerful enough. Most of the allied tanks were gasoline powered, which meant it didn't take much to set them on fire. Some surplus radial tank engines have ended up on crop dusters. Although these engines are basically the same as their aircraft counterparts, they aren't certificated and can't be legally installed on most aircraft. Crop dusters are "Restricted" category aircraft and apparently it's legal to install tank engines on them. Here's a link that lists all of the engine variants used on the ubiquitous Sherman.
