can extra fluid capacity be added to a self contained pump

i am building a log splitter and will be using the engine and hyd sys off of a commercial lawn aerator. Question is..i will obviously be using a much larger cyl. The present sys is sort of a self contained reservoir, pump and valve all in one that powers 2 small double acting cyls. It may hold a gal of fluid. (sorry dont have the brand name or model handy) It appears that I can plumb a line from the back of the reservoir where you fill it to a separate tank for capacity. Am I correct here and am I on the right track thinking i will need the extra capacity?? gracias
