I'll take exception with your comment re the 3010 vs the 170. I'll grant that the 3010 uses a little more fuel than the A-C but calling it gutless? Compared to WHAT? That AC 170 is a 4cyl 54 hp tractor and the 3010 is a 55 hp tractor. Also, if the 40 year old 3010 has ever had an overhaul, it likely has the 3020 sleeves and pistons. It is NOT going to be gutless any more than that AC 170 is gutless, and the 3010 will likely be a lot stronger than the AC if it has been updated. Either tractor would be fine for haying and will operate a moco or a baler just fine. I suspect that the John Deere will have better hydraulics (they'll be closed center for sure) and the 3010 will be about 700 lbs heavier also. If he wants to go plowing with this tractor, I suggest getting something in diesel. Other common tractors: IHC f656, Ford 4000, JD 3020, AC 180, Case 770 & 870, Case 830.
