Fuel Efficiency

I'd like some feedback on the following: I'm looking at some fuel economy figures of diesel tractors and it appears that as a group--the 70, 80 ,R, 820, and 720--just eats everyone's lunch with respect to fuel usage and horsepower developed. Why? Was it blind luck on JD's part (I hardly think so) that the big-bore motors JD used were happiest on diesel or maybe was it the relatively slow turning engines (not filling cylinders with fuel as often in a given time period) that made them great fuel-pinchers?
