Well, today was an enlightning day for me. I asked in another post about a problem with the hydraulics on my DB 885. Well, now I know "the rest of the story". First, it seems our local Case dealer/shop isn't too thorough in their garage work. This is the place that did the install on the new hydraulic valve body and valves. On the repair paperwork 9which I have in hand), the mechanic checked off the install had been done and notes that the hydraulic oil looks ok and does not need changing. Well, it turns out the hydraulic oil was the problem! Seems the mechanic dipped some from the top before he installed the valve body and, of course, having set for so long, all the gunk and sediment was in the bottom. We replaced the hydraulic filter (under the bottom of the tractor) and in the middle of where the filter goes is a bypass valve that is spring operated. It also has a magnet to pick up any small metal grindings from wear and tear. This thing was all gunked up and the bypass valve wasn't "bypassing". We drained the entire system and flushed everything with diesel fuel. Cleaned everything up and replaced the filter and hydraulic fluid fresh. Everything works like a charm now. One new "problem" of sorts...when the tractor is first started, there is some clunking in the bottom end of the engine for about 1-2 seconds and then it goes away. Mike (the seller of the tractor) thinks it might be a rod bearing because once the tractor heats up, the oil pressure drops to about 20 PSI (assuming, of course the old gauge is accurate to begin with), so he is going to replace the rod bearings for me as well. I almost feel sorry for Mike...this tractor ended up costing him more than he intended to put into it, and although I have already paid for it, he still insists on doing these things so that it's "right" when I finally get to take it home. He has already spent a fair amount of the money I paid for it to fix some things up. All I can say is it sure is good to find an honest, hardworking guy these days that's willing to do what it takes to make things right. If/when I need another tractor or other empliments, or any type of work on the tractor, Mike will definitely get my business.

Old Time Threshing - by Anthony West. A lovely harvest evening late September 1947, I was a school boy, like all school boys I loved harvest time. The golden corn ripens well and early, the stoking, stacking,.... the drawing in with the tractors and trailers and a few buck rakes thrown in, and possibly a heavy horse. It would be a great day for the collies and the terrier dogs, rats and mice would be at the bottom of the stacks so the dogs, would have a busy time hunting and killing, all the corn was gathered and ricked in what we c
