I brought up the google search engine, typed in "dictionary" and went to the first one that popped up (www.dictionary.com). Typed in "motor" and this is the result: mo·tor Pronunciation Key (mtr) n. Something, such as a machine or an engine, that produces or imparts motion. A device that converts any form of energy into mechanical energy, especially an internal-combustion engine or an arrangement of coils and magnets that converts electric current into mechanical power. adj. Causing or producing motion: motor power. Driven by or having a motor. Of or for motors or motor vehicles: motor oil. Typing "engine" in this dictionary produces:
en·gine Pronunciation Key (njn) n. A machine that converts energy into mechanical force or motion. Such a machine distinguished from an electric, spring-driven, or hydraulic motor by its use of a fuel. So, all engines are motors, but not all motors are engines. To call a diesel engine a "motor" is perfectly correct. But it is not correct to call an electric motor an "engine"...
