Dave the threshing machines were going out in my youthful days and the threshing machines I worked around were driven by gas tractors. The men explained to me that the long belt was easier to keep on and that the weight of the longer belts created better traction between belt and pulley thus did not have to be as tight. I think that safety , fire, steam, heat from boiler and such would be another reason for having the Steam engine so far away from the threshing machine. I did not do much work around a threshing machine but it was an experience I will not forget.
