At Walmart I have found a *very* effective wasp/hornet spray. It comes in a green can, labeled "Spectracide". Beats Raid, Black flag and such all to heck. Cheap also.

Something to be aware of is the time of year. As things get cooler and the days get shorter, Wasps, hornets and especially yellow jackets become more agressive. Where you might have been able to walk by the hive without problems all summer, your likelyhood of getting stung increase in the fall.
