Dad bought a 1010 RC Diesel mostly new at then local dealer's fall auction in about 1962. His cost was okay, plus my brother worked for the dealer at that time.
Dad was used to Ford Ferguson, so getting on and off the higher row crop configuration was harder. That gearshift was up on the console, but I don't think it had a bit of synchronization. 5 forward, 1 reverse.
Once you got the motor running, plenty of power! Ended up trading for some tires the next size up plus added wheel and front weights to try to control the spinning. He bought a 3 bottom 14" turning plow that worked okay.
One memory is of pulling the Oliver Grain Master (#15???, had a 6' header and v-4 Wisconsin) cutting wheat for a neighbor on one of the many hillsides of western piedmont NC. Even with the weights, tire fluid, and weight of the combine, those tires would still spin enough to leave parts of that ground stirred enough for sowing soybeans.

The tractor was a pain to start--think I remember Dad found the bendix spring on the starter had broken at one point. The battery didn't seem big enough for the starter, especially on a cold morning. I think he got hold of a tank battery, that he kept in the shed for jumping 1st thing on cold mornings. I still have the operator's manual for the 1010 RC.

My brother found a Ford 2000 (4 cyl, made in 1964, I think) that Dad ended up trading the 1010 for (or maybe he traded in 1964). Neither tractor had power steering nor live PTO. We didn't hardly know about such then! Seems like Dad put a spinner on the 1010 steering wheel, but the Ford was okay without such.

As time went on Dad wanted power steering and live PTO. My brother found a Ford 3000 with such and Dad traded in both the 2000 and the old Ford Ferguson. I think he enjoyed the conveniences of his last tractor. We sold it over 10 years ago, along with other farm equipment, after Mother and Dad went into a rest home.

Today's Featured Article - A Lifetime of Farm Machinery - by Joe Michaels. I am a mechanical engineer by profession, specializing in powerplant work. I worked as a machinist and engine erector, with time spent overseas. I have always had a love for machinery, and an appreciation for farming and farm machinery. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Not a place one would associate with farms or farm machinery. I credit my parents for instilling a lot of good values, a respect for learning, a knowledge of various skills and a little knowledge of farming in me, amo ... [Read Article]
