Sounds like you are not drawing a very good vacum. Hook up a vacum gauge to the intake manifold and look at it,high eeven vacum reading will make it draw fuel/air mix to crank. I worked for JD in '50s&60's and when the compression got low on their engines, they would always crank better with the throttle closed, because it caused the engine to draw the most fuel/air charge in the cylinders. Also is the choke butterfly operating correctly(seating in the housing) to cause it to pass less air and to pull more fuel from the carb bowl? Is the bowl vent open to allow atmospheric pressure to cause the fuel to flow to the air stream going through the carb? Would bet on low ring sealing quality and the fact that the cylinder head squish chamber is smaller probably did not really raise the compression, probably just caused more blowby of the compression. If it is not sealed to the top side of the piston, you can raise the compression out of sight, and will only make more of it go int the crankcase. The compression needs to be pretty near equal on all 4 cylinders to run smoothly. Maybe it is too cold up in Canada for it!!! Gene

Earthmaster Project Progress Just a little update on my Earthmaster......it's back from the dead! I pulled the head, and soaked the stuck valves with mystery oil overnight, re-installed the head, and bingo, the compression returned. But alas, my carb foiled me again, it would fire a second then flood out. After numerous dead ends for a replacement carb, I went to work fixing mine.I soldered new floats on the float arm, they came from an old motorcycle carb, replaced the packing on the throttle shaft with o-rings, cut new ga
