One thing to check if you do it yourself, is that the guide is properly fitted to the valve stem. If it is too tight, the valve may sieze during operation, which obviously isn't good. A machine shop will have the guide reamers to properly fit the valve for the correct clearance. Correct clearance is also important for the engine to run correctly, as there are no seals on the stems.
