The type that goes in the lower radiator hose (be sure that it is set up so the heat will go up into the engine, not the radiator) is good. I feel the best is a freeze plug heater and next best is the external tank heater that you plumb into the block drain and then into the head where the temp sending unit goes in. Set that one up so it goes into the heater from the block drain and the hot water goes into the head. We start our 1256 every day with this type down to 30 below zero with no problems. Make sure to plug it in 2 to 3 hours before trying to start or longer.
