The hotbulb engines like produced by Lanz,HSCS,Landini, Vierzon, were sort of early Diesel engines. The hotbulb, or hothead engines, were heated by a gasoline flame for about 5-10 minutes before you could start them. In the early days, the fuel dispension was pretty difficult. No fuel injection pumps and dispenser nozzles existed in that era, to achieve a sufficient vaporisation of the fuel. The fuel was injected, or sprayed on the hotbulb. As the name says, the hotbulb had the heat to vaporise the fuel, and start the whole process od internal combustion. Hotbulb engines are all slow runnig engines, most do not exceed 600 rpm, because this process of vaporisation through the hotbulb, takes more time than with the modern injection dispensers. if you want to know more, and check if my info is correct, search for hotbulb engines on www.howstuffworks.com
