Farmall H Voltage Regulator

I have a 1951 H. +6 pos. ground system. I had some problems with the starting switch, replaced it and at the same time cleaned the coil contacts on the voltage regulator. Noticed some arcing on the contacts. When I went to start it I now need to hold the starter switch in to keep the tractor running. How should the voltage regulator coil contacts be prior to start-up? (there is a large and a small contact) Open or closed? ....and after start-up? Open or closed?
