"Noise" comes from ignition as you mentioned,also from generator/regulator.An "RF choke"in power lead may help to filter it out.Also the antenna can pick it up,antenna should be as far as possible from engine.Tractor dealers used to offer a weather resistant fender mounted radio set up,you might find one a a salvage place.Excellant 6V radios were in pre mid 60s(6V) Volkswagons. Alternative:Quality "headphone" radio/hearing protector such as made by Peltor or Elvex(available thru Gemplers.com) or industrial supply stores ie:Grainger/McMasters...Bonus here is its usable on tractor,lawnmower,ATV,horseback,or anywhere you go....Now that you're really confused I'll quit..
