The term(s) 'standard AM' and 'step up transformer' doesn't compute. IF you mean a house radio using alternating current connected through a transformer it won't work. Transformers don't function on direct current. A 6vdc to 120vac inverter should be available. An inverter is an electronic version of the vibrator power supplies used in the old auto radios.
