Well, I'd suggest something in the small-medium size range. Get some of that big stuff and it's usually somewhat more difficult to work on. Second, I don't think that any one particular brand is any better than the other. Myself, I started with a Massey Harris and one big advantage of that brand is the fact that you can remove the engine/clutch assembly without splitting the tractor in half. Some other types are built the same way. And certain areas of the country have certain tractor makes that are more common than other areas, for example up here Masseys and Cockshutts are quite common whereas they aren't in other places. That way you can always find a parts tractor not too far away. A lot of parts just aren't available unless you can find an old wreck somewhere. One more thing, the rear rubber should be useable so if you can find one with good rear tires you'll be way ahead. Some rear tire sizes are pretty rare and some are more common and easier to find, especially if you're searching for used ones. The book called THE ANTIQUE TRACTOR BIBLE is a pretty good book and has a lot of good general information in it I would say. Some think it's too general but for someone just starting out I think it's priceless. The author's name is Spencer Yost and I've seen them for sale on this YT site.

After numerous dead ends for a replacement carb, I went to work fixing mine.I soldered new floats on the float arm, they came from an old motorcycle carb, replaced the packing on the throttle shaft with o-rings, cut new ga
