About 1967 I bought a surplus aircraft starter
motor that was 24v and built a winch for my
CJ-5. The motor was internally geared down
at 186:1 to the output shaft and the spec. plate
gave a figure of 900 ft/lbs on 24v. I mounted
the motor above the winch drum and drove it
at 2:1 using chain and sprockets giving a line
speed of about 30 ft/min on 12v. I did remove
the motors' internal flywheel as it took too long
to come to a stop with it in place. I also
fabricated a freewheeling cluch for the drum
using dowel pins pressed into the drums'
drive sprocket which engaged matching holes
in a sliding collar that was pinned to the drum
shaft. Later, on a buddys' Scout we used a
front lockout hub and axle end. My starter
motor was electrically reversible for lowering
loads as well but some are not. Anyway, I
used this setup for about 8 years and the last I
knew the winch was still going strong.
Because of the low gearing it ran about half
the speed of the early 6000# -rated Warn
winches but would pull a whole lot more than
they would as testified by more than one
instance where my winch pulled free a rig that
had just burned its' Warn down.

Today's Featured Article - A Cautionary Tale - by Ian Minshull. In the early 1950s my father bought an Allis Chalmers B and I used it for all the row crop work with the mangolds and potatoes, rolling and the haymaking on our farm. The farm and the Allis were sold and I have spent a lifetime working on farms throughout the country. I promised myself that one day I would own an Allis. That time event ... [Read Article]
