No big deal to switch. The only thing to be careful is to completely evacuate the system. Next be sure to add the pag oil. The problem is the old lines will leak the fluid slowly. R-134 has a lot smaller molecules, and the rubber designed for R-12 cannot contain R-134 as effective as the new lines. The R-12 molecules are a lot larger. But all lines leak. Unfortunately because you have to use hose on an automobile, the lines will always leak. Actually peak A/C performance on a vehicle is 4-5 years down the road. All vehicles are overcharged to compensate for this. I am an A/C designer for GM.
