You might want to pick one up in the spring instead. Summering one takes a lot less effort since they can forage for themselves pretty well in the summer. This would get you an easier start. Don't neglect the type of calf you buy. There is a big difference in the meat, and the rate & way they put it on. Lots of folks that raise their own calf for beef around here like a Jersey cross with an angus for this.
