T Bone, you probably should plan on more than 6 months of feeding if you want to get a 200 lb animal. Do like suggested and have 2. When they are under 600 lbs or so, that grazing is the big part of the diet they would do well with supplemented with a dab of sweet feed (grain with molasses or soybean oil added). Younger calves do well with some oats added in the grain but later on you can stop the oats and cut cost some of the feed. It is cheaper to buy the grain than raise it unless you are going to raise more than one or 2 calves a year and have to buy all the materials to mix with it and then grind it etc. I take some barrels in the back of the truck to the grain elevator and buy 500 or 1000 lbs at a whack and it works nicely for a couple calves. The corn I planted fed some coons and deer nicely but not the first ear left for the cattle. Just also a note, if you can find someone else who will sell a finished steer or heifer ready to kill, it will be probably cheaper yet than doing it yourself if you are paying a market price. That means the only reason for doing this yourself is you want to take care of the cattle. My opinions only.
