A high % of old diesels require ether for cold starts. Does it run on all cylinders quickly after start up? Is there only minimal smoke after 15 seconds or so? And what temperature are we talking? At any rate $2000cnd sounds pretty reasonable unless it's a piece of junk. And if you buy it, use no more ether than you have to. In tiny amounts it's not harmful but a 1second blast is a lot.
