What makes the valve core (aka schraeder valve) unique among automotive components is that you can take one out of virtually any car, truck, tractor, motorcycle, bicycle, airplane, etc. made in the last eighty years, put it in any other vehicle, and it will work. There are other components that haven't changed, but none that are completely interchangeable between different makes, years and types of vehicles. This was a "puzzler" question on the Car Talk radio show a few years back. FYI, there is a smaller core (called "Presta") used in bicycles that have very narrow tires.
