I'm going to be real general here but it should give you an idea. The average farm now is about 800 acres. In this area that would be considered a minimum economic unit if everything is paid for. The net income for the average farm is around $40,000, which is the return to labor and management. If you are in the grain business like we are you generally take your crops to the local elevator to sell unless you can sell direct to a local livestock producer or miller like ADM, Bunge or Staley. It has been a long time since farming has been good financially, but that takes a lot of research to figure out. Right now it appears that anyone planning to farm will be really small (less than 300 acres with an off farm job) or big (2000 or more acres)
