Opinion wise,I think milestone tractors would be those that pioneered innovations useful and dependable to the user.Without getting into brands, all did their jobs well enough, but different uses made some more popular or useful than others.Example,an N-Ford,T-Fergie,Allis C",may have been completely at home and adequate for the small acreage or dairy farmer, but would have been about useless in large prairie type grain operations, where crawlers and large"wheatland" tractors were the kings.Milestones in MY opinion, would be,rubber tires and road gears,hydraulics,PTO/Live PTO,3 PT/draft control, loaders and other "mounted" tools that increased utility of the base tractor and then branch into implements. After all the tractor was initially an "Iron Horse" built to drag along whatever was hooked to the drawbar.Like any other field, there were legendary tractors and lemons built by everyone, the true test of the breed can be seen out there working yet today,50-60yrs later, not in the"extremely rare""only 3 known" trailer queens that didn't stand the test of time.Don't get me wrong now,I love old iron of all genres and those that have aquired, restored and saved a piece of history, should recieve due reward for their efforts, but I get a bigger kick out of,say,a mud encrusted W40 on steel skidding out firewood logs than an acre of offloaded glossy waxed/buffed Hoyt Clagwells.

Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing. ... [Read Article]
