Melody, since you are not familiar with different types of tractors an option may be to rent different types of tractors to see if they suit your needs. Also factor in how much work you have to do and how long it will take you to do it. If you are looking at several years to finish the work you have planned then buying a tractor is a good option. If you need to get work done fast it may be best to rent different types of machinery to do the job right. Ford, New Holland, Kubota and JD make great compact tractors with lots of options. If you want to buy one go to the dealers in your area and ask them to let you try them out, you may be able to take one home as a demo. At least try them out on the dealers lot to see how they handle. By the way, if you haven't used a tractor much learn how to operate it safely. Tractors are not forgiving, they will kill or seriously injure you if you do not know what you are doing. Anyway shop around and take your time. If you decide to you can also rent equipment to do some work like moving stumps and rocks. Dozers are best for stumps and for rocks you can get a bobcat with a rockhound or rock harvester. I don't know about the other brands of skid steer loaders but the 800 series of bobcats are the best size for the work you're doing. Renting some bigger equipment for the tougher jobs that you will only have to do once will also allow you to go with a smaller tractor to do jobs like mowing and snow removal, thus saving money. Good luck!

The advice is timeless... so although it isn't necessarily antique tractor related, it will be prominently displayed in our archives to honor those who have the courage to ask and those who have the courage to respond in an honest, positive manner.
