Are you sure the pto is "live"? The pto lever is in the same location for live and non-live models. On that model of Ford, live pto was achieved through use of a dual stage clutch. The only difference between a Ford 850 and an 860 is the two stage clutch (and thus the live pto). The non original paint job kind of makes it a little tougher to be sure of age, etc. With the 800 front emblem and your model and serial numbers, I'm leaning toward it truly being an 850 with non-live pto. Do you have any pto-powered equipment (mower, baler, etc)? If so, attach one of them, start the tractor, engage the pto and release the clutch slowly. If you have a 2 stage clutch (and it's properly adjusted) you should reach a point about halfway of the pedal travel where the pto driven implement will start working but the tractor will remain motionless. Let the clutch up a little further and (if it's in gear) the tractor will start to move. With a non-live pto (model 850) the pto and the rear wheels will start to move at the same time. btw, my 850 with date codes from June to late July 1955 has a serial number 57804 so I'm betting you're going to find date codes from around April, May, June timeframe.

Well, although these tires were in good shape as far as tread was concerned, they looked real sad. All were flat, but new tubes fixed that. In addition to years and years of scuffing and fading, they had paint splattered on
