The rim of the lid prevents the all-thread from contacting the sides of the tank fill hole. The electrolysis worked fairly well for me on an outboard motor tank. The tank had some old sour fuel in it when I started, so I put several old tire cross chains in the tank and shook it every way I could and then drained it. After that I used the electrolysis trick. Then I drained it and washed it out with HOT water and some strong dish washing detergent. You have to rinse and drain the tank thoroughly and let it dry. When I put fuel in it I added some fuel conditiioner and/or Dry-gas. It worked for me.
