I suspect you are talking about a Delco 10SI alternator with built in regulator?? If so,the left regulator plug wire(#1 cast on the case) is the exciter and should have 12V power only when the tractor ignition switch is on. The right hand regulator plug wire(#2 cast on the case) is the sense wire which MUST be connected to battery power all the time. The easiest and most reliable way is to connect it to the output stud on the alternator rear along with the wire to the amp guage. This is very important as the right hand(#2) wire is where the regulator senses system voltage to correctly charge the battery. If the right hand #2 wire is NOT connected to continuous battery voltage it will read 0 voltage and cause the alternator to charge at max output all the time. This will quickly overheat and burn up the alternator. The only exception to this is if you have a 1 wire alternator installed. They do not need a sense wire as the 1 wire regulator senses voltage internally in the alternator. If a 1 wire alternator needs too much rpm to "kick in", you can add switched power to the left (#1) regulator terminal which will start the charging at low idle.
