IIRC, this makes use of a process called "destructive distillation". I remember doing an experiment in high school chemistry where we heated a chunk of wood in a container with a small outlet and then collected the gases coming off of the wood in a test tube. The gases in the test tube could then be ignited with a match. I've seen pictures of some of the automotive applications from the WWII time frame. I suspect the reason it didn't really take off in the US was that our gas rationing program was done more to conserve rubber than gas.
