In my opinion, what ever tractor you end up with, for gardens all you need is a rototiller for it. (pto powered) It replaces all the "drag behind tools" and easily does a better job than any or all of them. For one acre, or even a lot less than one acre i'd NOT want to get stuck with a Troybilt! (i have one) If i was getting a new walk behind tiller it would be the "best", a BCS. They are a much better design that a troy.
Unless you are a mechanic, don't buy a chinese made tractor no matter who has their name on it.
Of the compacts, Kubota has been around the longest, so that's probably your best chance of buying a decent used one.
