I've got a '91 Chevy shortbox 4x4 (1/2 ton, auto w/overdrive) with a 350 V-8 for getting around and a 1969 Chevy K20 (3/4 ton 4x4) with a 292 c.i.d. 6 and 4:11gears in it for the heavy stuff. The 1/2 t gets between 12 and 17 mpg depending on the load while the K20 gets from 10 to 15. With a granny gear 4 speed, low range in the transfer case and the 292s' down-low torque range I'm loaded for bear. The old Chevy was bought used with 48,000 mi. on it from the original owners' Illinois estate in 1975. I moved back to Colo. with it pulling first a loaded U-haul and then my '56 F-100 welding truck. It's hauled firewood (11,000 GVW), 3 ton loads of gravel, trailerloads of hay (17,000 GVW) and been my prime mover for over 25 years. Maintenance? I've put in 2 waterpumps, a starter and had to replace the clutch last year when a clutch-disc torsion spring broke. The old girl ain't fast, just steady! Oh yeah, I've turned down offers for hundreds more than I paid for it.

If it would just start when I turn the key, then I would use it more often. In addition to a bad case of old age, most of the tractor's original electrical system was simply too unreliable to keep. The main focus of this page is to show how I upgr
