Glad uou brought up chenicals we use :
I'm in north central Illinois , mostly corn and soybeans and a few beef cows . About 100 mi down stream fron the Chicago complex you all know what that is .
I have to have a permit called "Private Pesticide Applicators License" issued by the state ag department after a two hour test . Have to show this to supplier before I can purchase any chemical to use on crops . Now any urban homeowner can go to Wallyworld etc and buy Roundup , 2-4d or anything else to use on their lawn without any permit etc .
I heard this from farm group sources but it was also on the Paul Harvey "Rest of the Story" one day , statement was " there are ten times the amount of chemical concentration per acre used on lawns , golf courses , parks etc than on an acre of cropland . Now where does this runoff go to ? Does it go to a different river than the farm land ? We get blamed for all of this . I guess it's easier to blame us because we are a minority now days and it would be really bad to have a weed in a lawn around a $250,000 house .
There is a lot more to this but I guess I've went on long enough . I just get tired of us farmers being blamed for all the polution .
By the way I forgot about the MTBE blended with gasoline in California , was supposed to cut down on polution , didn't they find harmfull side effects from that ? Could have blended Ethanol with the gas been using it here for 25yrs . Ethanol made from good old US Cornbelt corn , not imported .

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo. ... [Read Article]
