I can not help you much with the design but, I would think that a round bar would be best. Probably about 2-21/2" in diameter. I was thinking of roll bars in race cars and such. If there is a speed shop or someone who races they could help you design one. Also look at other tractors old and new cosider their weight etc. Hope this helps.
Rember any design is probably only as strong as its weakest piont.
