Well I have heard the "charge the battery" one, and the " burn the carbon off the plugs so it will start easier" one. There may be something to both of them and it is probably a harmless thing at worst. That is if, before actually turning off the ignition, the engine is back to it's slowest idle. The "wash the oil off the cylinders with unburned gas" seems to me a valid reason NOT to shut the engine down unless it is running at it's slowest speed. If it is going to be very cold or some other hard starting situation I will do this sometimes, that bring up the engine speed for 5-15 seconds, let it back to idle, shut off ignition. Don't know if it helps.
