Time to rebuild is correlated more to care rather than hours. I've got tractors with over 8000 hrs on the origional engines. Got another one I bought with 4400 hrs on it and knew it needed an overhaul, guy told me it had never been touched. Got into it and it had been overhauled twice. All the bore had been ttaken and all the turn out of the crank. Wound up putting an extra 2000 in it. Basic rebuild: (this varies some with brand, should be a good high side est for the Perkins, they run pretty affordable) Piston Assemblies: $150.00 each X # of cylinders Main and Rod Bearings: $150.00 Gasket Set: $120.00 Machine Shop: $800.00 (disassemble short block, hot tank, pressure test, bore, turn crank, assemble short block, over haul cylinder head) Rebuilt Clutch/PP/ Throwout bearing: $350.00 Misc Supplies: oil, antifreeze: $100.00 Clean injectors/rebuild injectors: $50.00 each If you pull the engine yourself and reinstall that should be it. I usually charge about $500.00 to pull the engine, take to shop, put it all back on, and get it running.
Main things to look (listen) for: 1. Blow by from crankcase vent pipe, a lot of blow by or any oil and it means oh soon. Check after 2 hrs of hard running 2. Run engine to operating temp. Bring to 1800 rpm with a PTO load. Run 5 mins. Push throttle all the down to idle. Any "knocking" as it idles down would be bad.

He had over a period of months spent a fair amount of his hard earned cash on replacement parts for the old "trembler" ignition. Sadly though all his efforts seemed to be a waste of time and money as he still couldn''t get the temperamental old thing to run correctly!! If i said that this was a little frustrating for him that would be "conservative" in fact the problem had reduce
