I was just talking to the owner of a john Deere backhoe. I forget the name of the oil recommended by John Deere. Anyways , he blew a hydraulic line. In a pinch , he used another oil which said it was compatable. Backhoe hasn't been right since. When talking to the John Deere dealer , the dealer said that the special oil used in the John Deere backhoe desolved many different foreign contaminates like brake dust , etc.. By desolving the contaminates , the hydraulic pump would not restrict the flow of oil , causeing poor lubrication. And you know what happens with poor lubrication. May I remind you that the same oil , in the same reservor was used for everything. I believe the backhoe owner said everything included engine oil , transmission oil , hydraulic oil , brakes. I don't know from personal experience , only what has been told to me. So oil does make a difference. Other than the old letter series farm-all , Hi-Tran fluid was the main oil recommended for the international transmissions.
