Three is old enough....I started at 1! Dad had put me on the seat of our IH 300 at the sugar shanty, got off to adjust the sap line, and I reached down and turned the key--I'd apparently saw Dad do it enough times to figure I had the hang of this tractor driving stuff. Of course, I don't recall it myself, but I've heard the story enought times. Luckily, tractor was in first gear on a very gentle hill, though I had made the turn at the bottom by the time Dad caught up. Needless to say, that was my last tractor driving until I was older--the key got pulled when I was in the seat! Started driving by myself at 7 on our '42 Farmall A, mainly towing wagons and raking. However, I wasn't allowed on the roads until 12, which is probably wise. As with most things, maturity is the important thing here--most kids who have a good upbringing and training (you break it you fix it, if it's not yours, don't touch it, check the oil first, etc. etc.) and normal physical development are perfectly fit to drive a tractor at 7-10 years of age--in fact, where I live (upstate NY) it's the norm. By this age, most farm kids have been doing farm chores for 3-5 years, and are well acquainted with responsibility.

After my grandfather’s death in 1955, J.P. Rollins, son of the landowner, used the tractor. In the winter 1985, while in his possession the engine block cracked and was unrepairable. He had told my father
