I hooked up a "12v" coil once to a stock 12v VW system WITH THE RESISTOR REMOVED and it lasted about 30 seconds after I turned the key on; guess the points were closed. I had assumed that since it was a 12v coil that I didn't need the resistor.....WRONG! Somehow the manufacturers' label had been placed over the "12volts...Use with external resistor" stamped on the coils' case. As has been pointed out, there ARE coils with the resistor built in, just make sure which kind you have. On 12v systems that used a resistor (pretty much all automotive stuff since the change to 12v from 6v was made during the '50s) the coil ran off of the 'start' post of the ignition switch when starting which bypassed the resistor and supplied 12v to the coil FOR STARTING ONLY. When the ign. key was released the switch returned to 'on' and the coil received 6v from the resistor which is wired to the 'on' post of the switch. This setup allowed maximum sprark for starting but returned to 6v for running. I commonly retain the stock 6v coil on tractors that I convert from 6 to 12 volts, I just run a resistor in the line and forget about the 12v start feature most of the time.
