I started off at age 4 (not alone) steering a farmall super A. This is a great starter machine. It's fairly small, steers well and has a full operator's platform. I don't recommend any tractors that require you to straddle the transmission and put your feet on little running boards. Another reason I recommend the super A is there is a good drawbar for you to stand on that puts you where you can easily reach the throttle and ignition switch. A good idea to prevent curiosity when you're not there is to install an in line shutoff on the battery cable. many of these are key operated so you can take the keywith you. This also prevents dead batteries if anyone plays with things like light switches. Most important, make sure he knows this is NOT A TOY and has to be taken seriously. One last thing, make sure he wants to do it
