As most other folks have said it really depends on where you are and the soil types on the farm. USDA-NRCS soil survey books show types of soils on aerial maps and have tables of AUM's per acre (or acres per AUM, depending on where you are). For central Kentucky on farms 8 miles apart I have vast differences incarrying capacity. Stock 50 mature females (30 cows and 20 mares) on one 200 acre farm and sell just a little (50 rolls or so) of hay. Figure feeding 3 4x4 rolls per mature female. Other place I've got 80 mature females on 325 acres (30 mares and 50 cows) but sell 10,000 square bales and a 150 or so 4x5 rolls. Feed about the same. Aloso depends on what you are feeding as far as hay as to suppliments. My rule is a cow must wean a 500 + pound calf in 9 months and must calve at intervals no greater than 1 year on hay, pasture, and minerals. If she has to have grain to breed back or make the calf, she leaves.
