Another concept you may consider is that work is performed by torque. Horsepower is a function of time. A high horsepower , high torque item does a lot of hard work -fast. Take away the HP and you can still do hard work, just not as fast. 1 HP is the energy to move 33,000 lbs. 1 ft in 1 minute- or to move 1lb. 33,000 ft in one minute. This will get the waves just a-blistering with replies. Doesn't make it much easier to understand about your neighbors car, but if you look at a 300 horsepower auto compared to a 300 horsepower semi tractor, the difference is , oh about 1000 ft-lbs difference in the available torque produced.
