People refer to a starting engine as a pony engine. It's a small gasoline engine with a transmission/usually but not always. and a pinion and clutch to engage the flywheel ring gear and crank over the large Diesel engine. They usually have a decompression systen to hold open the intake valves and crank the engine a bit to loosen up things in real cold weather. Then you put the diesel on compression for a bit then pull on the fuel and it should start. The exhaust from the starting engine runs through a pipe in the intake manifold to preheat the intake air as well. Later Bob
